Summer Chemistry (2017)
Curriculum: Discovering Design with Chemistry (Berean Builders Publishing, ISBN 978-0-9962784-6-1). You only need the answer key if you intend to sell the set together when you are done. See section on tutor responsibilities below.
Additional required materials: Permanently-bound (NOT spiral-bound) lab notebook with at least 100 perforated, carbonless duplicates. I recommend Barbakam brand (ISBN 978-0-9785344-5-5, https://www.barbakam.com/order-online/Lab-Notebook-100-Pages-Top-Permanent-Bound-Copy-Page-Perforated-p73430370, R.O.C.K. Solid usually has this in stock per my request); also, a scientific (but not necessarily graphing) calculator.
Lab kit: Lab kit compatible with the textbook listed above. It doesn't have to be purchased from Berean Builders; sometimes you can find better prices from Home Science Tools, Nature's Workshop, or other homeschool resources. Just be sure it is marked as compatible with the Berean Builders Chemistry curriculum, NOT Apologia. Students will need their own set, so sharing will not be possible.
Cost: $420, payable in 2 payments (1st and 4th classes)
Dates and Times: Mondays from 8am-1pm (or 9am-2pm, depending on final location), which includes a 20-30 minute lunch break (students will need to pack a lunch). We will meet weekly for 8 weeks, June 5, 12, 19, 26, July 3, off for one week because of Summer Camp (most of our students missing that weeks!), then July 17, 24, and 31.
Location: To be determined, but for sure in the general Mandarin region (San Jose, Old St. Augustine, 295 area)
Tutor will: Lecture 2 chapters a week every class; supervise corresponding labs during class time and provide disposable materials not included in lab kits; grade homework, tests, and labs; post grades online where accessible 24/7 by parents.
Students will: Read chapters ahead of appropriate lectures; take good notes in class; bring their lab kits with goggles to every class; write up specific sections in labs before those labs are performed in class; finish writing up labs after those labs are performed in class; turn in carbon copies of completed labs the week after labs are performed in class; submit homework and tests for 2 chapters a week online.
Parents will: Have students to class on time every week; check assignment due dates and grades online regularly to ensure student is on track; commit to having their student take the entire course, and in the event of withdrawal, still honor their financial commitment to the tutor.
